HOW TO WATER PROOF YOUR HOUSE ?

Waterproofing of house

Construction Industry and water are inseparable.  We must have heard of water gives life & takes life., likewise water creates building and destroys building. During construction of building huge amount of water is required or we can say without water construction can not be done, but if these water accumulates  in the wrong places after completion of construction then it is dangerous to the building. Then leakage starts causing damage to the walls & ceilings. It decreases the durability of the house  by making cracks in the wall & ceilings .

Listed below are some of the common reasons why leakage starts :

· Accumulation of water , which starts penetrating the surface.
· Poor quality and improper proportioning of concrete constituents.
· Poor compaction of concrete which results in , air voids.
· Construction joints between concrete and brickwork , and the discontinuity in concrete casting (old and new concrete) leading to minute cracks, which facilitate water seepage.
· Other structural cracks because of loading conditions and failure of structure to withstand stresses.
· Movement of water from bottom to top because of capillary action in the brickwork, leading to dampness just above the floor level.

How to avoid leakage :

It is advisable to avoid leakage in your structures proactively, Failing which you would be forced to undertake avoidable repair after construction. The following measure may help avoid leakage:

1. Provide good drainage facility with proper slope at the places where there are chances of water accumulation . This is the best preventive measure.
2. Use good quality of material with correct concrete proportioning. For example the use of blended cement or less water can reduce the permeability. Similarly proper proportioning helps concrete become uniformly packed and dense.
3. Ensure proper compaction of concrete with an immersion vibrator for less air pockets.
4. Avoid construction joints which create weaker points for water to seep.
5. Ensure proper structural design and construction to prevent cracks
6. Undertake a proper Damp-proofing course(DPC) to prevent movement of ground water to the top. Some useful methods include applying bitumen, concrete DPC layer, etc at the plinth level.
7. Use waterproofing compounds for water retaining structures.

Before Construction of home you should check the water table of that soil. So that you can decide whether to put waterproofing chemicals into your house or not. But with these thing what is important for you is to know whether your house require waterproofing or damp proofing. People always thought that both are same thing but that’s not true. Water proofing is far more effective as it can act as a barrier to different forms of water such as water vapor, soil moisture, Water under hydro static pressure. But dam proofing can only prevent the soil moisture.

What you should know about waterproofing chemicals:

There are many waterproofing chemicals available in the market. However , normal concrete construction would not require waterproofing materials if designed and constructed with good quality materials & proper workmanship.

However ,Waterproofing chemicals are useful for water retaining structures like water tanks and are widely used in repair & damp-proof treatments . Waterproofing chemicals are available in powder and liquid forms. It is advisable to buy waterproofing material from reputed companies. Always read the usage instructions in the product catalog or on the container/pocket.Generally ,one packet or container of the dose is specified for 1 bag (50 kg) of cement and other required constituents. Please take an expert’s view on a case-to-case basis.

Which water proofing method is best ?

There are two methods .One is conventional & another is modern method. In conventional method a rich cement paste or tar is used . However, such systems failed as they become brittle over time and develop cracks. As the conventional procedure fails again the thermal expansion , so it can not completely water proof. The modern ways of waterproofing are liquid brush applied solutions which can be bitumen-based, acrylic-based, PU-based, etc, and pre-formed membranes which are loosely laid or torched or self-adhesive membranes. Which are more durable than the conventional method waterproofing. Now a days there are different kind of waterproofing chemicals are available according to the requirement such as for exterior wall , for bathroom, for ceiling etc.To know more about water proofing guidance go through water proofing chemical website.

Some Measures for watrer proofing Flat Roofs
